The Apocalypse is a belief that the world as we know it is coming to an end.

[edit] Biblical Interpretation

In the Book of Revelation of the Bible, the Apocalypse is referenced and it is sometimes referred to as the End War. During the Apocalypse the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will appear, known in the Bible as Conquest, War, Famine, and Death.

[edit] Darksiders

In the Darksiders Series, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse that appear are slightly different as Fury and Strife have replaced Famine and Conquest, respectively.

The Apocalypse occurs at the beginning of the first Darksiders title, being prematurely triggered by the breaking of six of the Seven Seals. Earth is the battlefield for the End War, but because the human race is not yet prepared for the battle, the entire race is annihilated. The Angel forces from Heaven and the Demon forces of Hell waged battle on Earth.

The leader of Heaven, the Archangel Abaddon battled with Straga, one of the leaders of Hell. The Angels blame the appearance of War during the Apocalypse as the reason that Abaddon feel in battle to Straga. War himself will take on Straga, and while he is able to cut out an eye from the giant demon, he is unable to defeat the creature.

War is taken in front of The Charred Council, where he blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse and tilting the balance in favor of the Demons from Hell. When War is in front of the Council, he will strike a bargain so that he can be sent back to Earth and punish those responsible for disrupting the balance. The Charred Council agrees with this offer, but they assign The Watcher to serve as a warden over War along his quest. The council will also strip away most of War's power, but they will return the Chaoseater to him upon accepting this arrangement. 100 years will have passed by the time the Council allows War to return to Earth.
