During the Apocalypse, Demons came to Earth to battle with the Angels and destroy all the Humans. Demons have a range of physical appearances from the giant Chosen such as Straga, or the more skeletal looking demons like Vulgrim.
After the Apocalypse, the armies of Hell won the battle and blocked the portal, preventing the Angels from returning to Heaven. Thus the Angels were left stranded on Earth and over the 100-year period from the Apocalypse to the time period where Darksiders takes place, their numbers have dwindled.
Many of the Demons inhabited Earth after the Apocalypse. The Ashworms found a home in The Ashlands, while some of the Chosen such as Tiamat could be found at the Twilight Cathedral.

There are several notable demons that are found throughout the Darksiders Series.

The Destroyer is the leader of the demons and the main antagonist of Darksiders.

Samael is a rebel demon who does not see The Destroyer as an ally. War must bring Samael the four Hearts of the Chosen to free him from the Scalding Gallows, opening up a warp to The Black Throne.

Vulgrim is a demon merchant that will help War along the way be providing him information. Vulgrim will also sell new items and abilities, which War can purchase with souls. War first meets Vulgrim at The Crossroads and will be given the Earthcaller in exchange of 500 souls.

Lilith is an influential Demon that is capable of turning even the most good of Angels into evil Demons. Lilith is responsible for transforming Abaddon, the fallen leader of the angels, into The Destroyer.

The Chosen are the demons that serve as major bosses in the various regions of the Destroyed City. War must recover a Heart of the Chosen from each of these creates and bring it back to Samael.

Tiamat is the bat queen who rules over the Twilight Cathedral.

The Griever is a giant insect who rules over The Hollow.

Straga is the commander of Hell during the invasion of Earth. He is responsible for killing Abaddon and he serves as the Chosen of The Black Throne.
