Karn is a member of the Maker race and is a relative of Ulthane. He is believed to be Ulthane's nephew.[1]

Karn serves as a guide to Death throughout much of his journey through the Forge Lands. During The Fire of the Mountain Quest, Death will first encounter Karn in The Charred Pass. Death and Karn will battle alongside one another to defeat a group of Construct Warriors. Death will then speak with Karn and he will grant Death access to The Cauldron.
If Death previously spoke with Muria and started the Shaman's Craft Side-Quest, then Death can speak to Karn about acquiring Stalker's Bone from within the Cauldron.
If the player has the Death Rides pack, once Death meets up with Karn just outside of the Cauldron, Karn will task Death with finding a special silver platter for him that he lost within the Cauldron. This will begin the Lost and Found Side-Quest where Death can recover the Journeyman Platter within the Cauldron. As Death collects these items and progresses in the main story, Karn will ask him to find additional items.
After completing the Cauldron, Death will speak with Karn once again. He can continue the Shaman's Craft Side-Quest, and will ask Karn about Mordant Dew.
Death will then need to travel to Tri-Stone to speak with Alya. After acquiring Redemption, Death will meet up with Karn once again in Stonefather's Vale. During The Tears of the Mountain Quest, Karn will speak of the Drenchforth that lies to the west.
Karn will serve as Death's companion while in The Foundry. Karn will help out Death by tossing him across distant gaps, as well fighting off enemies. In certain puzzle situations, Karn can be used to hold open massive storm dorms, allowing Death to cross.
It's unclear what Karn's motives are, but he is trying to prove himself and show his worth to Death and his fellow Maker's.
