When War wears the mask he will be able to see into a parallel dimension, allowing him to see objects and paths that that would otherwise be non-existent. When War wears the mask, his eyes will glow an orange color, and the world he sees will change to have an orange shade.
[edit] Uses
The Mask of Shadows is first required in the battle with Shadow War, along with the follow journey to reach the Tree of Knowledge in Eden. Once War acquires the Mask, he will earn the Sight Beyond Sight Achievement or Trophy.
War will also need to use the Mask of Shadows while he is looking for the seven Armageddon Blade Shards that are needed to reassemble the Armageddon Blade. The Mask will allow War to see hidden objects where War can use his Shadowflight to reach higher ledges. Additionally, there are hidden bombs and hookshot targets that appear, allowing War to use the Crossblade and Abyssal Chain to solve puzzles.
After War takes off the Mask, he will still have a few moments where he the effects of the mask haven't worn off. These few seconds are often times required, as War will need to use another item in his inventory before time expires.
