[edit] Overview

What follows after War, but Ruin?
– Darksiders Trailer

Ruin is the Phantom Steed that War rides in Darksiders. Each of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse rides along on his or her own horse. Ruin surrounds himself with a red flame and also has glowing red eyes. In Darksiders II, Death rides on his own horse, Despair.

[edit] Darksiders

Early on in the game, Ruin is nowhere to be found. After War was imprisoned, Ruin had been captured by Demons and held prisoner in The Ashlands. After War defeat Ruin's rider in a colosseum setting within the Ashlands, War acquires Ruin for the remainder of the game. Whenever War finds himself in wide open land, he could quickly jump on Ruin and ride across the land. As soon as War acquires Ruin, he will get the Reunited Achievement or Trophy.

Ruin has five bursts of speed that War can use consecutively while riding. This will allow Ruin to gallop along much faster for a short period of time. After not using a burst for a short while, the bursts will regenerate and War can use them once again. While Ruin is stationary, he can perform a a stomp attack, which shatters a part of the ground below him.

While riding on Ruin, War can still use his Chaoseater. In fact, War strikes harder, faster, and wider, his powers somehow magnified by the stallion beneath him. When War is on top of Ruin, he can quickly dismount from his horse, and using that in combination with his Shadowflight ability, War can reach higher platforms. Furthermore, when War is falling down, he can summon Ruin, who will catch him as he is falling.

While riding on Ruin, War now has the ability to fight with the Ashworms. War can use Ruin to outrun these giant worms, escaping their deadly mouths. War can use his personal handgun Mercy while riding on Ruin and this is used to defeat the first Ashworm. Later on in the Ashlands, War and Ruin battle together to defeat The Stygian, one of the Chosen. With Ruin's help, War is able to get the third Heart of the Chosen.

[edit] Trivia

  • The name Ruin is not mentioned anywhere in the Book of Revelation. Despite this fact, the game developers decided not to refer to Ruin as The Red Horse. Instead, went with the name Ruin, which "just sounds cool". They had the opinion of, "What follows after War, but Ruin?".
