[edit] Overview

The Scalrding Gallows looms ominously over a lake of fire, its curved spires grasping at the foreboding skies. When Samael dared to defy The Destroyer, he was imprisoned within the hellish confines of the Gallows. Samael was a demon lord of legendary dark power, yet even he was broken by the Destroyer's might.

[edit] Darksiders

War first visits the Scalding Gallow early on in the game after making his way from The Crossroads, passing through the Library. The area is littered with all sorts of enemies, with the initial big bad guy being the Phantom General. This fellow is the leader of the Phantom Guard and has been chosen to protect the imprisoned Samael.

After War defeats the Phantom General, he must push two of the Gargoyle statues in place, causing blood to flow to the center of the area, which frees Samael from his prison. Samael instructs War that he must defeat the four Chosen enemies in order to reach The Destroyer's spire. War will need to bring Samael the four Hearts of the Chosen, no questions asked. Samael initially instructs War to head towards the Twilight Cathedral to seek out Tiamat. Since War is unable to reach the Cathedral by land, Samael will grant him Shadowflight, a set of supernatural wings that allow War to glide.

War will return to Samael throughout his quest after defeating each of the Chosen. The Scalding Gallow serves as a central hub that branches off to the rest of the Destroyed City. After War gains new items and abilities, he will be able to access new areas that branch out from the Scalding Gallow.

[edit] Enemies

Initially the area has some rather weak enemies, but as War progresses through his quest, the Scalding Gallow becomes a rather dangerous area. Towards the end of the game, even Phantom Generals roam the streets.
