Shadow War represents the dark side of War and he must be defeated in order for War to reach the Tree of Knowledge within Eden. Shadow War retains many of War's attacks, as well as his Wrath Abilities.
[edit] Darksiders
After defeating Straga within The Black Throne, Azrael will bring War to Eden. Before War is allowed to visit the Tree of Knowledge, he must first conquer his shadow. Azrael gives War the Mask of Shadows, allowing him to see into the Shadow Realm. As soon as it is worn, the boss battle with Shadow War will commence.
Shadow War wields his own Chaoseater and will use it to slash at you. Shadow War performs a number of War's sword attacks, including the aerial flipsaw attack that is performed by holding the attack button while in mid-air. Shadow War will occasionally block your attacks and will also dodge your attacks. Despite this, Shadow War can easily be defeated with persistent sword attacks. Unlike War, Shadow War only wields a Chaoseater and does not have the Tremor Gauntlet or Scythe.
Shadow War does use some of War's Wrath Abilities, notably a form of the Blade Geyser attack, as well as Affliction. When Shadow War is using Affliction, it is best to just keep your distance and avoid him until the wrath ability has worn out.
Shadow War has the ability to use his own Chaos Form. When he does so, it is suggested that War either avoids Shadow War until he reverts back, or War can use his own Chaos Form ability.
After the battle, War knocks Shadow War down to the ground and will use his Chaoseater to decapitate Shadow War. The barriers around the battle field will be lifted and with the Mask of Shadows, War can cross the bridge and head up the pathway to the Tree of Knowledge.

Another dark alternative to War makes an appearance in Darksiders II. War's Shade is controlled by the Crowfather and is fought very early in the game while in The Dark Fortress.
