[edit] Overview

There is but on authority in the universe that cannot be questioned: the Charred Council. These three omniscient beings, bound by ancient laws, are charged with preserving the balance between Heaven, Hell, and the Kingdom of Man.

They are Old Ones and serve as ancient keepers of balance that govern the eternal struggle between Heaven and Hell. When the Third Kingdom of Earth was formed, the forces of Heaven and Hell attempted to bring their influence to this kingdom. In order to prevent a destruction of this kingdom, the Council ordered a cease-fire between Heaven and Hell, and this allowed the Kingdom of Earth to grow and thrive.

There are three heads that physically represent the council, though the true number of council members and their identities are unknown. The heads have different roles, and speak differently. The first is harsh and accusatory; the second questions all things, seeing the far reaching consequences of the crime before it and the judgment at hand. The third is wise and slow to rouse, and usually offers a course of action that is most fair. Unfortunately, the council itself has become corrupted, knowingly or unknowingly contributing to its strength as it devours creation.

[edit] Location

The Charred Council can be seen a fire-filled area, making it possible that the lair is located in Hell. However, given they are a mediator between Heaven and Hell, it is believed that the location of the council is some undefined realm that sits outside of Heaven or Hell.

[edit] Death's Door

The Charred Council from Death's Door
In the prequel comic, Darksiders II: Death's Door, Death will be sent to Earth on a mission to slay a rogue Demon. However, this request comes from Abaddon and not The Charred Council. The Horsemen are suppose to be servants of the council and should not take the orders from anybody else. Because of this, Death is unable to use his Scythe when he travels to Earth and instead, he must acquire another weapon. The Charred Council are only mentioned at the beginning of the comic and do not make an actual appearance.

[edit] Darksiders

After a premature occurrence of the Apocalypse, The Charred Council blame War for it happening. During the End War at the start of Darksiders, War battles with both Angels and Demons, including a boss battle with the demon Straga. Despite this fact that War battled forces of both heaven and hell, the Charred Council blame War for tilting the balance in favor of Hell.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were only to be summoned after all Seven Seals have been broken. However, since only six of the seven deals had been broken, there was no reason for War to be on Earth and fighting within the battle. Furthermore, the other three Horseman, Death, Fury, and Strife were not to be found in the End War.

When War is in front of the Council, he will strike a bargain so that he can be sent back to Earth and punish those responsible for disrupting the balance. The Charred Council agrees with this offer, but assigns The Watcher to serve as a warden over War along his quest. The council will also strip away most of War's power, but they will return the Chaoseater to him upon accepting this arrangement. 100 years will have passed by the time the Council allows War to return to Earth.

[edit] Dishonesty

The Charred Council used War as a pawn to seek justice for those responsible for causing the Apocalypse. The Council knew about Abaddon and his conspiracy to start the Apocalypse early and they had considered summoning the Four Horsemen to deal with Abaddon, but they chose not to since the Horsemen would not carry out justice without proof. They knew that accusing war and stripping him of his power would cause him to seek justice.

[edit] Aftermath

At the conclusion of Darksiders, after the Seventh Seal has been broken, War is resurrected and kills The Watcher. Uriel tells war that he will be hunted down, not only by Heaven, but by the Council as well.

[edit] Darksiders II

The Charred Council will appear in Darksiders II, but its role is presently unknown.
