Overview

Ulthane is an Old One with a unique perspective on the endless machinations of Heaven and Hell, yet they don't concern him one bit. He greets demons and angels alike with a wink, a merry whistle, and the business end of his black hammer. The only thing Ulthane takes seriously is the shaping of steel. Among the ranks of legendary weapon-makers, he is unmatched.

Ulthane wields a massive hammer, which explains why he has the name The Black Hammer. The hammer is so heavy that even War cannot lift it until he acquires the Tremor Gauntlet. When Ulthane wields the hammer it is has the unique ability to be thrown and then return to Ulthane's hand. When Ulthane uses the hammer in combat it has a golden glow around it.

When War first enters Anvil's Ford, he will see the massive hammer in the ground. Once War tries lifting it, this will cause Ulthane to appear and he tells War not to touch what isn't his. After War asserts that Ulthane is the Black Hammer, the two begin a battle with one another. After using Chaos Form and harming Ulthane, the two will be interrupted by Uriel and a group of angels.

Ulthane and War will then work together to battle with the Angels, competing against one another to see how will end up with more kills. At the end of the pathway, War will battle and defeat Uriel. Ulthane will instruct War to defeat The Griever, and this will prove that War is who he says he is.

After War defeats The Griever in The Hollow, War returns to Ulthane, now capable of lifting and tossing the massive hammer since he now has the Tremor Gauntlet. War will receive Mercy from Ulthane, a pistol that is native to War's brother Strife. War will question what Ulthane's role is in this, but Ulthane will remain silent.

Much later on in the quest, when War saves Azrael within The Black Throne, War learns that both Azrael and Ulthane helped Abaddon break six of the Seven Seals.

After War has acquired all of the Armageddon Blade Shards, he will return to Ulthane at Anvil's Ford. Ulthane was the one who originally created the Armageddon Blade, and will use the shards to reforge the blade.

Achievements

Darksiders II

It is unclear whether Ulthane will appear in Darksiders II, but several other members of the Makers will appear, including a full town dedicated to their race.

Trivia

  • When Ulthane tosses his hammer, it will return to him. This is an ability that is shared by Thor's hammer Mjolnir in norse myth.
